ARREST MADE IN ID THEFT CASE – TROY, ALABAMA
According to Stacy Graning at the Troy Messenger, Ramona Watson, the former executive director of the Child Advocacy Center was arrested this past week on two felony counts of identity theft. Watson was being held in the Pike County Jail on $5,000 bond. Watson resigned from the Advocacy Center on May 13.
Court documents demonstrate the identity theft charges are for fraudulent credit cards open by Watson. The court papers allege Watson used the names and identities of a coworker and a board member at the Pike Regional Child Advocacy Center to open up Chase VISA credit cards.
The Child Advocacy Center first learned of the fraudulent charges when charges began to appear for an account that was believed to be closed. Later, a second unauthorized account was discovered in the name of one of the board’s members. The account had a balance of $19,500.
Consumers should regularly review their credit card statements for unauthorized charges. You have a right under federal law to dispute unauthorized credit card charges. You also have a right to a free credit report if you believe you are a victim of fraud or identity theft.
